Accounting, Associate in Science

The Associate Degree in Accounting program is designed to prepare students to work in a variety of positions within the accounting industry. The Accounting curriculum will engage students in the principles and applications necessary for success in corporations, small business and nonprofit organizations. Students will learn to analyze and synthesize data, report to the users of accounting information in the proper format and to make recommendations to management.

The program is designed for those who seek employment in the accounting field or for entrance into a four-year degree program. It provides a solid foundation in accounting that addresses the collection, analysis and reporting of financial information. Additionally, students will learn to use accounting software programs to complete tasks more efficiently.

Coursework in financial, managerial, tax accounting and accounting information systems will culminate in a capstone course which will prepare students to sit for professional certification exams in Microsoft Excel, Intuit QuickBooks and bookkeeping from the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers.

A certificate in Bookkeeping (19 credits) may be earned as part of the milestone policy in the Accounting program.

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of all program requirements, graduates will be able to:

  1. Organize, analyze, summarize and report financial data in an ethical manner through knowledge and application of accounting concepts and principles;
  2. Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills by identifying, gathering, measuring and summarizing financial data;
  3. Integrate and apply technological skills to accounting and business problems;
  4. Develop awareness of professional and ethical issues facing the accounting industry;
  5. Create professional financial reports and analysis for users of accounting information; and
  6. Achieve professional certification in bookkeeping, QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel.

Students must complete all graduation requirements as stated in the catalog. In addition, students must complete the following programmatic graduation requirement:

  1. Maintain a GPA of 2.3 in the major.
